What are the job opportunities?

The job market in Spokane and the entire northwest is healthy and growing. New opportunities and job titles are establishing themselves as fast as the changes in technology. From traditional print media to the ever-evolving multimedia and web design, the need for new designers exceeds the recent graduates. This reflects a nationwide trend. With an active coop ed internship program and job placement assistance, the SFCC Graphic Design Program is currently placing about 85% of its graduates. Statistics are available upon request, as well as the types of firms, salaries and duties of the designer.

How much money can I make?

Starting entry level wage in the Spokane area is $10 - $12 per hour. As you gain experience your salary increases. Currently the average wage for a Graphic Designer in Spokane is approximately $39,000.

Can any of my previous coursework count towards my degree?

Yes. If you already have a Bachelors Degree or have completed courses at a University or College some courses may be eligible for substitution. All you need to do is fill out the Course Substitution Form, attach a copy of your transcript and submit it to the faculty for review.

When does the program start?

The Graphic and Web Design program primarily starts fall quarter.
It is recommended to follow the suggested course listing.

However, if offered... the following courses can be taken during any quarter.

Do I need a portfolio to enter the program?

No. This is currently not a requirement.

Are there any prerequisites to the program?

Students need to take the reading assessment test given to all students when applying to SFCC and achieve a COMPASS reading score of 80 or higher or an ASSET reading score of 40 or higher. However, if you have completed a college level reading course this assessment is waived.

Should I choose Graphic or Web Design?

Good question. It's hard to decide. However, you don't have to make a quick decision. The curriculum was developed to help you make a wise decision. The courses you take for the first three quarters are the same. You will work on both web and print design. This way you gain a basic foundation in both mediums and can focus on your major in the second year.

What type of computer do I need?

Although PC's are generally cheaper. Our advisory board recommends that students learn to design on Apple Macintosh Computers. This is an industry standard. The Graphic Design lab has approximately 60 computers available for student usage.
