GRDSN 237 Multimedia III Outline

In this course, students are required to demonstrate the following competencies at an advanced level of proficiency:

  1. Develop a time-based concept
    1. Define the problem by meeting client and reviewing project brief
    2. Gather notes, thumbnails, and short drafts
    3. Write the storyline or script
    4. Create storyboards
    5. Complete a preproduction checklist
    6. Make a shot list for photos, videos, and graphics
    7. Organize your crew, talent, equipment, props, locations, etc.
  2.   Identify equipment used to create media
    1. Identify the video tools available; video cameras, camcorders, DSLRs, pocket cameras, phones, computer cameras, etc.
    2. Identify the audio tools available; cameras, portable recorders, phones, computers, microphones, etc.
    3. Identify the computer software available for image and sound creation; Adobe Suite, Maya, Blender, Audacity, etc.
    4. Identify the editing software used to assemble multimedia content; iMovie, GarageBand, Audacity, Audition, Premiere, Final Cut, Flash, Dreamweaver, etc.
    5. Familiarize yourself with the operation of the equipment you will use
  3. Write a research piece on multimedia in use around you
    1. Use correct grammar and spelling
    2. Collect examples, links, screenshots, etc.
    3. Hypothesize what types of projects you would like to work on
    4. Present your findings to the class
  4. Identify the rules governing the use of intellectual property
    1. Review the copyright law; copyright.gov is a good starting point
    2. Locate the legal limits established by popular stock media services
    3. Review the necessary releases for models and locations
    4. Locate the process for securing the rights to use recorded music
  5. Record audio
    1. Use an off-camera microphone to capture good quality audio
    2. Record voice-over audio using the recording booth or a suitable workstation
    3. Save the audio files into computer storage
    4. Edit audio to consolidate the best takes and add sound and music
    5. Use effects to modify your audio
  6. Shoot video
    1. Scout your shooting location and take note of lighting and framing conditions
    2. Plan your lighting; consider natural light and the use of supplemental lights, modifiers, and reflectors
    3. Plan your method for capturing audio; be aware of natural sound interferences
    4. Block out your shots for wide angle, medium, and close-up angles
    5. Plan your use of tripods, handheld, or other camera supports
    6. Shoot multiple takes to ensure good options; use a clapper or similar sharp sound for synchronizing
  7. Edit video and audio
    1. Import your files into the appropriate editing software; iMovie, After Effects, Premiere, or Final Cut
    2. Organize your clips in the composition to match your storyboard
    3. Trim and adjust the in and out points of the clips
    4. Add audio files and synchronize them to the video files
    5. Import graphics and use titling tools to add text and other still images
  8. Create simple animations
    1. Use a still camera to capture a sequence of stop-motion images and create a sequence in an editing application
    2. Create a short cell animation; use either a Wacom tablet and draw on layers, or draw a sequence on paper. Sequence the images in an editing application
    3. Create components for an animation as layers in software and animate the parts in After Effects; for example, separate body, head, arms, and legs.
  9. Create a motion graphics animation
    1. Storyboard an animated text/graphics message sequence
    2. Plan for an audio track
    3. Create the needed text and graphics
    4. Import the images into After Effects
    5. Animate the components; synchronize to audio
