Required Text:

No book is required. A set of cooperative education forms will be used to manage internships.

GRDSN 266 (1cr) Course Description:

In this course Graphic Design students will study areas such as self-awareness, self assessment, career awareness, career exploration, career decision making, career planning, career placement, success factors, attitudes on the job, motivation, initiative, human behavior, human relations, employability skills and interviewing.

GRDSN 267 (3cr) Course Description:

Cooperative Education is an organized program of study and educational field experience. You must enroll in the appropriate co-op seminar and field experience related to your academic or occupational goals.

An instructor / coordinator will teach the co-op seminar and assist you in locating an appropriate full or part-time field site. If you are currently employed, the instructor / coordinator will determine if the work site is appropriate for a co-op field experience in your field of study.

As a co-op student, you may receive cooperative education credit and paid or volunteer positions. The instructor-coordinator will visit the student at the work site at the mid-point of the quarter or at the mid-point of the experience. Students are required to complete 99hrs of cooperative work experience.

The student may receive variable credits for hours of structured work experience during a quarter. The credit award is based on a maximum of 1 credit for every 33 cooperative education hours during a quarter. Graphic Design students are required to complete 3 credits of cooperative work experience (99 hours) to meet graduation requirements.

Course Objectives:

The purpose of these courses is to structure your field experience. Through assignments in the student handbook you will be doing the following:

1. Complete a learning agreement with the college and an employer in a situation where the employer/training site and the college cooperate in advancing your education.

2. Establish learning objectives in areas that pertain to your major course of study and in areas that correspond to your particular career interest.

3. Be evaluated by your employer / supervisor and by your faculty instructor-coordinator.

 

GRDSN 266 Grading / Attendance Policy:

GRDSN 266 Grading is based on industry standards. Students are required to complete and turn in to Canvas the following to receive a final grade:

  • Submit all required activities and forms listed above = (10 points)
  • Submit student weekly reports = (20 points)
  • Deliver the mid-point and final evaluation forms filled out by an employer = (30 points)
  • Present an oral presentation reflecting the internship experience to the class = (40 points)

Grading / Evaluation Points:

0 - 20 = 0.0

20 - 30 = 0.5

30 - 40 = 1.0

40 - 50 = 1.5

50 - 60 = 2.0

60 - 70 - 2.5

70 - 80 = 3.0

80 - 90 = 3.5

90 - 100 = 4.0

Attendance: Attendance is crucial to your progress and will be taken at the beginning of every class.

The attendance policy is as follows:
Meet dates are required; failing to attend a meet date will lower a student's grade one letter grade (example, 4.0 to 3.0, etc.). Failure to attend and participate in all three the scheduled meet dates = 0.0 grade point.

Students will meet face-to-face with the instructor on the following dates:

GRDSN 267 Grading / Attendance Policy:

GRDSN 267 Grading is based upon the completion of the internship experience and the Employer Final Evaluation.

Students receiving "Average" final evaluation scores receive a 3.0

To move toward a 4.0 students must exceed expectations in either attitude, dependability, communications, human relations, job knowledge, job skills or job performance.

Question: What happens if I don't get an internship during the quarter, how will I be graded for the 266/267 courses?

Answer: Students who do not aquire an internship during the quarter they registered will receive a 0.0 grade, and have to sign up for the next 266/267 internship courses.

Question: I recieved an internship, my paperwork is turned in, I am part way through my internship, but will not be able to finish the 99 required hours by the end of the quarter; what will my grade be?

Answer: If you have already started your internship, your paperwork is turned in, and you are progressing through the 99 required hours, an Incomplete grade will be granted for the 266/267 courses, until the internship is completed the next quarter. The Incomplete grade applies to only one quarter, and reverts to a 0.0 grade if the coursework is not completed by the end of the next quarter.

Question: How do I find an internship?

Answer: Start by identifying the kind of experience you would like to have; are you focused on print, web, or multimedia? Do you have a resume and portfolio ready (even a pdf portfolio)? Have you developed a cover letter introducing yourself and your interest in obtaining an internship with a specific firm; what skill sets do you have they may be interested in, or that would make you a good fit in their firm? Why do you want to have an internship with a particular firm?

The Careers in Design page on the website lists many of the firms located in our area, listed by services. Faculty post internship opportunities on the facebook pages, and keep a list of past internship employers.

 

Communication: Email is required for both courses.

Email is checked by the faculty Monday thru Friday. Please allow 24 hours for your instructor to reply to your email.

Note: This course syllabus is only for the quarter listed above and appropriate changes may be made by the faculty. Also, future syllabi for this course may be different.
