Project: Portfolio Site

  1. Research the target audience by:
    a) creating a list of specific qualities the potential employer is looking for when hiring for the position

  2. Research and collect examples of well designed portfolio websites to clarify conclusions in design thinking by:
    a) choosing examples that clearly show the graphic design principles in action

  3. Create a portfolio sitedesign that..

    a) expresses the personality or spirit of you ("the graphic designer") through the creative concept, imagery, materials used and typography
    b) answers the question, "Why should I hire this person?"

  4. Communicate concept / composition using thumbnail sketches that show how the site is assembled and the pieces to be presented that are...
    • Are fast and un-detailed
    • Drawn in proportion to the dimensions of the finished piece
    • Conveys an entirely separate or different creative concept
    • Shows emphasis, balance, rhythm, unity
    • Shows use of Gestalt principles: similarity, proximity, continuation, closure, figure/ground
    • Conveys composition, sizing and position
    • Shows that you can have more than one good idea
    • Shows the relationship between graphic elements
    • Shows general shapes of graphic elements

  5. Develop creative design solutions that demonstrate effective use of the elements and principles of design by
    a) incorporating it into the 3 roughs of the
    sitedesign

  6. Communicate refined concept, detailed composition and typographic formatting of the self-promotion / leave behind design using tight roughs that:
    • Work off of one of the previous thumbnail sketches
    • Draw in proportion or actual size
    • Convey type choice
    • Convey type size, spacing and leading
    • Indicate usage of color
    • Convey photographic or illustrative imagery
    • Create each rough an entirely different creative concept
    • Hand draw roughs using pencil, felt tip or colored pencil

  7. Assess your work and make appropriate revisions by getting feedback through other faculty members and other colleagues

Assessments:

• You need to complete the assigned competency listing

• You should be able to identify weaknesses

• You should be able to identify steps for improvement

• Your self assessment indicates the quality and success of the project
