Project: Package Design

Scenario:

You would like to show off your modeling skills in order to secure employment at a firm that specializes in package design. They have recently done design work for a candy company, a wine distributor, and a shoe retailer.You have decided to show off your skills designing packages for any or all of those possible clients. They are particulary interested in creating a mood to induce the customer to buy the product.

Primary tasks:

A. Research package design.

B. Decide which products to illustrate.

C. Come up with thumbnails and rough sketches to show the concepts behind the idea.

D. Model and render the objects and the background

  • Use effective lighting.
  • Use a camera view.
  • Render the object from various camera angles and decide which is the most effective.
  • Create a mood.
  • Use your own textures

E. Submit a mounted color print to your instructor.

Objectives:

  • Creatively illustrate packages to show off your modeling skills.
  • Choose a camera view that is aesthetically pleasing and workable.
  • Create mood with the shape, cameras, texture and lighting of the object.
  • Set a scene that makes sense to the viewer and has capabilities for animation.
  • Submit a printout in a professional manner and on time.
  • Follow written and oral directions.

Grading Criteria:

The final project will be assessed on:

1. Self and instructor assessments

  • The student was able to identify weaknesses
  • The student identified steps for improvement

2. The quality of the solution and execution

  • The student completed the assigned competency listing
  • The student presented a professionally designed piece on or before the stated deadline
