Design Lab Exercise-- Scan_01

Scanning Line Art

Scan original line art to be placed into a page layout.

Scenario: You have just received a copy of a logo executed by conventional drawing techniques. This logo will be placed in a newsletter as spot art for an article on gardening books.

Step 1: Read over the scanning article

Step 2: Scan the "Joys of Gardening" logo on page 59 in the Graphic Design Solutions textbook.

Scan the image...

  • using the techniques outlined in the article
  • is accurate to the original
  • has no halftones
  • is not dithered
  • is saved as a bit mapped image

Step 3: Create a new document using a page layout program and save it to your folder. Title it "scan_01" with your last name (example: scan_01stiles). Place your scan into the document.

Step 4: Create a folder and title it with your last name and save it to your lab course folder.

Step 5: Put your name at the top of the page and print a laser proof.

Step 6. Check the laser proof for accuracy and make necessary corrections to the file.

Step 8. When the image quality is close to the original, have another student proof it and initial it. Make whatever edits indicated by the student evaluation and reprint.

Step 9. When finished, staple together ALL proofs and submit to your instructor.

Note: If you need a re-fresher on using the scanner:
