Create this document using Adobe Indesign:
In this exercise you will:
Step 1 - Download the exercise files.
You can download a folder (.sit archive) containing the text and image files for this exercise by clicking here. You can view a PDF version of this document by clicking here.
Open InDesign. Create a new InDesign Document:"File>New>Document...". When the dialogue box appears, make sure it is set for letter size page and click "OK". Save the document into the exercise folder you downloaded in step 1. Use your lastname_firstname for the title and add the extension .indd.
Step 3 - Place a tiff image
Choose "File>Place...". In the
dialogue box, go to your Exercise folder and select "Music.tif".
Click "Open". Your cursor will change to the loaded
graphics icon (
Step 4 - Create a text frame and manually enter text for the headline.
All text in Adobe InDesign resides inside containers called text frames. Like graphics frames, text frames can be moved, resized, and otherwise manipulated. Choose theType tool ( Manually enter text into the text frame by typing the words "The Providence Strings". (NOTE: Entering text this way creates a new text frame and puts the text into the frame.)
Step 5 - Format the text and set the paragraph alignment.
With the text box selected, choose "Window>Type & Tables> Character" to view the character window. Now choose a font and size that matches the example at the top of this page. We chose 42 pt. Helvetica Bold.
To center the paragraph alignment, click on the Paragraph
tab, which is directly to the right of the character tab. Then click
on the "Centered" icon.
Step 6 - Kern the headline
Put an insertion point in the character pair you wish to kern. Use the kerning arrows in the Character window.
In the illustration above, an insertion point is put between the P and r in the word Providence so that negative kerning will bring the characters closer together. Enter the amount of kerning in the the Character window. We chose -40.
Step 7- Create a text box and place a text file.
Choose the rectangle frame tool
(
Step 8 - Change the text to 2 columns.
Choose the "Object>Text Frame Options..." and enter "2" for the number of columns.
Step 9 - Format the sub-headings.
Highlight each sub-heading and choose "Bold" in the Character window.
Step 10 - Place the logo image.
Choose "File>Place..." and select the file "Logo.eps" from your exercise folder. Position the image at the bottom center of the text frame (see the example at the beginning of this tutorial).
(NOTE: Be sure that you do not have an insertion point in the text frame or the image will be placed as an IN-LINE graphic, meaning the image will be placed inside the text frame at the insertion point.)
Step 11 - Apply text wrap to the logo image.
With the logo selected, choose "Window>Text Wrap". To make the text flow around the log, click on the "Wrap Around Bounding Box" icon. To add room around the logo, enter "1p0" (one pica, zero points) in the top, left and right offset boxes.
(NOTE: To get the two columns to match up, choose
the selection tool (
Step 12 - Check the 2 columns of text for isolated text.
Check carefully to see if your text contains any widows, orphans, or runts. Fix any and all that you find.
Step 13 - Save the file.
Save and submit the finished exercise to the server directory specified by your instructor.
