Adobe InDesign Basics: Exercise 2

Character and paragraph styles:

After viewing the Chp.8 Character and Style Videos... you will be able to create 3 different typographic layouts using "Character and Paragraph Styles" to organize information for a menu design.

In this exercise you will...

  • Place the text document provided
  • Create character styles
  • Create paragraph styles
  • Create three separate documents
  • Design three distinctive typographic styles for each layout

Step 1 - View the Chp. 8 Character and Paragraph Style Videos

Step 2 - Copy the Exercise file to the desktop.

Download the text file for this exercise by clicking here.
Create a new InDesign document: "File>New>Document..."

Step 3 - Place a text file

Choose "File>Place...", select the text file provided (style_sheet_ex.doc), and click "Open". Your cursor will change to the text loaded cursor. Click (just inside the left margin about two inches from the top of the page) to place the text.

Step 4 - Create character styles for single lines of text...

  • Main Specialty Section
  • Name of Entree
  • Price of Entree (Note: add Tab & leaders)

Step 5 - Create paragraph styles in order to save paragraph formatting attributes and make global revisions for...

  • Description of Entree

Step 6 - Once the character and paragraph styles attributes are set format the type provided.

Step 7 - Select the file menu, and choose "save as" and save three separate files (ie: style_sheet_1, style_sheet_2 and style_sheet 3)

Step 8 - Using the 3 different documents... create 3 different menu layouts setting the character and paragraph styles.

Step 9 - Save and submit the finished exercise to the server directory specified by your instructor.
